WTU's vascular plant type collections contain about 1,200 specimens, and include much type material from such early Pacific Northwestern collectors as Cusick, Leiberg, Elmer, Heller, Howell, Flett, Abrams, Blankinship, Macbride, Sandberg, and Aven Nelson, as well as more recent collectors such as St. John, Peck, Maguire, Eyerdam, English, Ownbey, Cronquist, Holmgren, Constance, and Detling.
Many of our types came to the herbarium with the incorporation of J. W. Thompson's private herbarium in 1943. J. W. Thompson made a consistent effort to visit type localities of as many northwest taxa as he could; as a result, the herbarium is particularly rich in topotypes. Topotypes, however, are stored with the general collections and are not accessible through this page.
Approximately 86% of the types come from the USA, 3% from Mexico, and 2.5% from Canada. 26% come from Washington, 20% from California, 10% from Oregon, and 8% from Idaho. 5% of our types are holotypes, and 68% are isotypes.
Tad Dilhoff, a volunteer with the herbarium, deserves special recognition for dedicating his time to photographing our type specimens.
