Taprooted perennial, the stem much branched at the base into prostrate or ascending branches 5-30 cm. long.
Distribution: Along the coast in Washington; Vancouver Island, B.C. south along the coast to California.
Habitat: Maritime species of coastal bluffs and meadows.

Sanicula bipinnatifida   (purple sanicle, purple black-snakeroot)

Taprooted perennial, the solitary or few branching stems 1-6 dm. tall.
Distribution: Occurring chiefly west of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia south to California.
Habitat: Uncommon at low to moderate elevations in dry, open areas.

Sanicula crassicaulis   (Pacific sanicle)

Taprooted perennial, the solitary, erect stem 2.5-12 dm. tall.
Distribution: Chiefly west of the Cascades in Washington; British Columbia south to California.
Habitat: Common in meadows and open woods from the coast to low elevations in the mountains.

Sanicula graveolens   (northern sanicle, Sierran black-snakeroot)  
(= Sanicula graveolens in Flora of the Pacific Northwest)
Taprooted perennial, the single stem branched at the base and upward, 0.5-5 dm. tall.
Distribution: Distributed on both sides of the Cascades in Washington; British Columbia south to California, east to Montana and Wyoming.
Habitat: Common in open woods at low to mid-elevations in the mountains.

Sanicula marilandica   (Maryland sanicle, Maryland black-snakeroot)  
(= Sanicula marilandica in Flora of the Pacific Northwest)
Perennial with a cluster of fibrous roots from a short crown, the stem solitary, erect, branched only above, 4-12 dm. tall.
Distribution: Eastern British Columbia, northeast Washington, and northern Idaho, east to the Atlantic coast.
Habitat: Moist, low ground, less often on moist, wooded slopes.
