Origin: Introduced from South America
Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; widely distributed throughout much of North America.
Habitat: Dry, disturbed areas.
Species Description:

General: Monoecious, glabrous to puberulent, basally branched annual, the several stems forming a rounded plant up to 10 dm. tall.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, the blades obovate to elliptic, 1-2.5 cm. long, narrowed to slender petioles ¼ to nearly as long.
Flowers: Flowers in small, axillary clusters, subtended by several narrowly lanceolate to needle-shaped bracts 1.5-3 mm. long; sepals 4-5, distinct, those of the pistillate flowers unequal, the longest equal to and like the bracts; those of the staminate flowers smaller, scale-like, acute but not spine-tipped; petals none; stamens 3 or 4; styles 3.
Fruits: 1-seeded capsule.
