Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.
Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington, British Columbia south to California.
Habitat: Bluffs and rocky or sandy beaches, less commonly in other low, open places.
Species Description:
General: Stout perennial from a short, stout rhizome, the stems clustered, 5-15 dm. tall.
Leaves: Leaves broadly lanceolate to elliptic, entire, or with a few teeth or lobes, 8-15 cm. long and 1.5-5 cm. wide, white-woolly beneath and green and glabrous above.
Flowers: Heads very numerous in a dense, ample, paniculiform inflorescence; involucre 3-4 mm. high, glabrous, yellow-green and shining, very narrow and few-flowered; corollas all tubular, yellowish, fertile, the outer ones pistillate, 3-7, the inner perfect, 2-3; receptacle naked; pappus none.
Fruits: Achenes glabrous.
