Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.

Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia south to California, east to Arizona and New Mexico.
Habitat: Gravelly to heavy soil, usually where vernally moist, at low elevations.
Species Description:

General: Glabrous annual, the several stems spreading to erect, simple or branched from the base, 10-30 cm. high.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, fleshy, entire, linear to oblanceolate, 1.5-7 cm. long and 2-10 mm. wide, narrowed to slender petioles, with a few marginal hairs.
Flowers: Flowers single in the leaf axils below, becoming racemose toward the branch ends; pedicels stout, 3-10 mm. long; sepals 2, unequal, 3-8 mm. long, ovate, one usually pointed, with coarse, marginal hairs; petals 5, equaling the sepals, deep crimson or rarely white; stamens 5-12, the filaments broad, free to the base; style short, stigmas 3.
Fruits: Capsule papery, 3-valved, equal in length to the sepals.
