Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.
Distribution: Distributed in the central and southeastern counties in Washington; Washington south to California, east to Idaho and Nevada.
Habitat: Dry, rocky or sandy areas, often in sagebrush, low to moderate elevations.
Species Description:
General: Glandular, herbaceous perennial from a woody crown, the many stems 2-6 dm. tall, glabrous except for the calyces.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, odd-pinnate, the leaflets 5-7, elliptic to obovate, 1-3 cm. long and 3-7 mm. wide, entire; stipules small, bristle-like.
Flowers: Inflorescence of dense, many-flowered, bracteate, terminal and axillary spikes, 2-7 cm. long and 1.5 cm. thick; calyx and bracts tawny-woolly to glabrous; calyx tube 3 mm. long, the 5 teeth lanceolate, shorter; corolla irregular but not pea-like, pink to rose; 1 petal broad-clawed, attached to the calyx, other 4 petals narrow-clawed, attached to the staminal tube, alternate with the 5 stamens, petal blades and claws each 3-4 mm. long.
Fruits: Legume 1- or 2-seeded, indehiscent.
