Distribution: East slopes of the Cascades, British Columbia to California, east to Alberta and Wyoming
Habitat: Vernally moist areas in sagebrush to meadows at mid-elevations in the mountains
Species Description:

General: Scapose, perennial herbs without rhizomes, the flowering stems 1-3 dm. tall.
Leaves: Leaves basal, glabrous to puberulent, the blades usually lanceolate to oblanceolate, 3-20 cm. long, narrowed to winged petioles that are somewhat shorter.
Flowers: Flowers 1-10 in an umbel, terminal on the scape, usually 5-parted on recurved pedicels; calyx with a short tube, the lobes lanceolate, purple-spotted, glabrous, 3-6 mm. long; corolla with a very short tube, the lobes 1-3 cm. long, usually rose-pink to deep orchid, strongly reflexed, the tube yellowish with a purplish-red ring; stamens clustered around the style, opposite the petals, the filaments about 1 mm. long, usually yellow and smooth; anthers 6-8 mm. long, usually deep purple; style single, slightly exceeding the stamens, stigma not enlarged.
Fruits: Capsule cylindric-ovoid, 8-12 mm. long, with the tip dropping off to release the seeds.
