Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.
Distribution: Widely distributed throughout Washington; Alaska to California, east to Montana and New Mexico.
Habitat: Moist, usually shady areas, sea level to mid-elevations in the mountains.
Species Description:
General: Sub-glabrous to stiff-hairy annual or perennial from coarse, fibrous roots, the single, simple, erect, hollow stem 2-6 dm. tall.
Leaves: Basal leaves long-petiolate, the blade cordate-deltoid, 2-8 cm. long, deeply tri-lobed, the segments shallowly lobed and toothed; cauline leaves few, alternate, transitional to the bracts that consist of several linear-lanceolate lobes.
Flowers: Pedicles single-flowered, up to 6 cm. long; sepals 5, spreading to reflexed, 1.5-3 mm. long, quickly deciduous; petals 5, yellow, 2-3 mm .long; nectary scale glabrous, as broad as long, the lateral margins attached ½ their length; receptacle globose, 2.5 mm. long, glabrous; stamens 10-20; pistils 10-30; ovary superior.
Fruits: Achenes obovate, 2.5 mm. long, flattened, the margins keeled; stylar beak broad, 1-2 mm. long, recurved and hooked.
