Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.
Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia south to California, east to the Rocky Mountains.
Habitat: Subalpine to alpine ridges, talus slopes and rock crevices.
Species Description:
General: Spreading, freely-branched shrub 2-5 dm. tall, the herbage pubescent and glandular; branches bristly and with 3-5 nodal spines 4-6 mm. long.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, the blades 1-2.5 cm. broad, palmately 5-cleft 2/3 their length and irregularly lobed and toothed.
Flowers: Inflorescence of 4- to 7-flowered axillary, pendant racemes; pedicels 1-3 mm. long, jointed; calyx tube saucer-shaped, 1 mm. long, lined with a yellowish-pinkish disk, the 5 lobes ovate to obovate, yellowish-green to pinkish, 2.5-3 mm. long, spreading; petals half as long as the calyx lobes, pinkish or purplish, fan-shaped, inserted at the edge of the disk; stamens 5, yellow, equal to the petals, inserted on the disk; ovary inferior, covered with purplish, stalked glands.
Fruits: Berry 5-7 mm. long, obovoid-globose, reddish.
