Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.

Distribution: Chiefly in the Olympics and Cascades mountains in Washington; Alaska south to California.
Habitat: Woods, from sea level to moderate elevation in the mountains.
Species Description:

General: Creeping to climbing or erect shrub, the stems 1-12 dm. long, covered with soft or stiff hairs.
Leaves: Leaves evergreen, leathery, shiny, alternate, ovate to ovate-elliptic, 5-9 cm. long and 3-5 cm. broad, sharply serrulate.
Flowers: Flowers 5-15 in terminal and sub-terminal, axillary, bracteate racemes; calyx deeply 5-parted, covered with stalked glands, ½ the length of the corolla: corolla united, 5-lobed, broadly urn-shaped, 7-10 mm. long, pinkish, glandular-puberulent; stamens 10, anthers opening by terminal pores, with 4 sharp-pointed awns.
Fruits: Capsule berry-like, surrounded by the persistent, pulpy calyx, 6-10 mm. broad, purplish.
