Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.
Distribution: Widely distributed east of the Cascades in Washington; southeast British Columbia and Montana, south to California.
Habitat: Desert plains to open lower mountain slopes.
Species Description:
General: Herbaceous perennial from thick roots, the several stems 2-8 dm. tall, grayish-hairy to greenish.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, petiolate, the blades 2-6 cm. long, reniform to ovate-deltoid, from shallowly 3- to 5-lobed to round-toothed.
Flowers: Inflorescence an interrupted, compound raceme; calyx 5-lobed, stellate, 5-10 mm. long, the pedicels shorter than the calyx, with 3 linear bracteoles from the base; petals 5, apricot-pink to orange-red, 1-2 cm. long; stamens numerous, the filaments freed from the staminal tube individually; ovary superior, the carpels 8-12 in a ring around a central axis; styles equal to the number of carpels, the stigmas capitate
Fruits: Capsules 3 mm. long, 1-seeded, rough-veined and indehiscent on the lower third.
