Distribution: West of the Cascades in Washington; British Columbia south to California.
Habitat: Deep, fertile, generally moist soil along the coast and prairie areas.
Species Description:

General: Dioecious trees with trunks 10-20 m. tall and up to 1 m. thick, the bark rough, grayish-brown, the young twigs puberulent, becoming glabrate.
Leaves: Leaves odd-pinnate, the leaflets 5-7, ovate to oblong-obovate, up to 15 cm. long, entire to serrate with rounded teeth, acuminate, light green above and paler beneath, sub-sessile.
Flowers: Flowers in crowded panicles, appearing with the leaves; staminate flowers with minute, bract-like calyx, stamens 2, anthers much longer than the filaments; pistillate flowers with much larger calyx, the 4 lobes cut into narrow segments, about ¼ the length of the ovary; style longer than the ovary, bi-lobed.
Fruits: Samaras 3-5 cm. long and 3-9 mm. broad.
