Distribution: West of the Cascades, Alaska to California
Habitat: Moist woods, swamps and open canyons from sea level to moderate elevations in the mountains
Species Description:
General: Several-stemmed shrub to small tree, 3-12 m. tall, the young trigs crisp-puberulent.
Leaves: Leaf blades lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 4-10 cm. long, pointed, serrate, occasionally with a lobe on one or both margins, deep green above, paler beneath.
Flowers: Inflorescence 5-12 flowered, flat-topped; calyx glabrous to woolly, the 5 lobes lanceolate, recurved, 5 mm. long, deciduous; petals 5, white, oblong-oval, 9-14 mm. long; stamens 20, shorter than the petals; styles usually 3.
Fruits: Fruit 3-chambered, fleshy, obovoid, 10-16 mm. long, yellow to purplish-red.
