Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.

Distribution: Widely distributed throughout Washington; Alaska south to California, and in the mountains in Colorado and Utah.
Habitat: Open or wooded areas, low to moderate elevations in the mountains.
Species Description:

General: Coarse shrub 1-2 m. tall, more or less prickly or nearly unarmed, the infrastipular prickles larger than the other sturdy prickles.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, deciduous, odd-pinnate with 5-7 leaflets; leaflets elliptic or ovate, serrate or doubly serrate, 1-7 cm. long and 0.7-4.5 cm. wide.
Flowers: Flowers large, usually solitary at the branch ends; sepals 5, 1.5-4 cm. long and 3-6 mm. wide, constricted in the middle and expanded toward the tip; petals light pink to deep rose, 2.5-4 cm. long; stamens numerous, pistils many.
Fruits: Hips globose, 1.2-2 cm. long and thick, purplish-red.
