Conservation Status: Abundant; of no concern.

Distribution: Both sides of the Cascades in Washington; Alaska south to northern California.
Habitat: Moist woods from sea level to mid-elevations in the mountains.
Species Description:

General: Large, spreading tree to 30 m. tall; branches greenish-barked.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, puberulent on both sides, cordate, 10-30 cm. broad, deeply 5-lobed.
Flowers: Flowers perfect or staminate, the two types borne together in large, many-flowered, axillary racemes or panicles, greenish-white, 10-15 mm. broad; sepals and petals usually 5; stamens usually 10, the filaments bearded at the base, borne toward the outer margins of a thick, 10-lobed disk; styles and stigmas 2; ovary superior, 2-celled.
Fruits: Samaras covered with stiff, golden hairs, the wings divergent less than 90°.
