White-hairy annual from a taproot, the simple to freely-branched stem up to 10 dm. tall.
Leaves all opposite, cauline, linear-lanceolate, 5-12 cm. long and 3-7 mm. wide.
Flowers few to several in an open inflorescence, terminal on the main and lateral stems; pedicels stout, 5-15 cm. long; calyx tube 12-16 mm. long, strongly 10-ribbed, the 5 lobes linear to lanceolate, 20-40 mm. long; petals 5, red, twice as long as the calyx tube; stamens 10; styles 5.
Capsule about equal to the calyx tube.
