Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Stream banks, moist hillsides and forest openings, fields, and wastelots at low to middle elevations.

Flowers: June-September

Description:
General:

Glabrous, perennial herbs with milky juice, the simple to branched stems 3-10 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, entire, yellowish-green, erect to ascending, oblong-ovate to lanceolate, rounded but with a sharp, slender point, 5-11 cm. long, short-petiolate and acute to rounded or sub-cordate at the base.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of both terminal and axillary cymes, the leafy branches of the lateral cymes extending above the terminal cyme; calyx divided nearly to the base, the 5 lobes lanceolate; corolla 2-4 mm. long, whitish to greenish-white, broadly tubular, the 5 lobes nearly erect; there are triangular, awl-shaped appendages alternate with the bases of the 5 stamens in the corolla tube; style very short, enlarged; ovary superior.

Fruits:

Follicles 2, elongate, 12-18 cm. long, sickle-shaped.
