Aromatic, rhizomatous perennial, 3-19 dm. tall, simple up to the inflorescence, white-woolly at least above.
Leaves 3-11 cm. long, lanceolate or lance-elliptic and entire to deeply lobed, the lobes sometimes toothed, up to 1 cm. wide excluding the lobes, white-woolly beneath and often above as well.
Inflorescence paniculate, ample or narrow; involucral bracts imbricate, dry, 2.5-4.5 mm. high; corollas all tubular, yellowish, fertile, the outer ones pistillate, 5-12, the inner perfect, 6-45; receptacle naked; pappus none.
Achenes glabrous.
