Distribution: In the North Cascades and northeast corner of Washington; British Columbia and Alberta south to Nevada and east to New Mexico.

Habitat: Meadows and open slopes at moderate to high elevations in the mountains.

Clustered perennial, the stems 1-3 dm. tall, erect or ascending from a woody base, usually unbranched, villous to glabrate.

Leaves linear-lanceolate, sometimes broader, usually entire but the upper sometimes lobed, glabrous to pubescent.

Inflorescence showy, usually crimson but occasionally scarlet or yellow, elongating in fruit; bracts oblong-ovate, rounded, entire with 1-2 pairs of short, lateral lobes, puberulent; calyx 15-25 mm. long, cleft above and below, its primary lobes divided into 2 blunt segments 3-6 mm. long; corolla 20-35 mm. long, the galea much shorter than the tube and 4-5 times as long as the dark green lower lip; stamens 4.
