Distribution: From the coast to mid elevations; both sides of the Cascades in Washington. British Columbia south to California, east to New York and Quebec.
Habitat: Coastal bluffs, forest openings, alluvial areas, disturbed sites.

Glabrous biennial or short-lived perennial, 1.5-8 dm. tall.
Leaves entire, or often with some small teeth, narrowly oblanceolate, up to 10 cm. long and 1.5 cm. wide, somewhat resinous.
Heads rayless, 1-1.5 cm. wide; involucre strongly resinous, its bracts firm, herbaceous-tipped; flowers yellow, the inner sterile; pappus of 2 or more deciduous awns.
Mature achenes with one or more apical knobs.
