Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington at low elevations; British Columbia to northern California.

Habitat: Salt marshes, rocky shores along the coast, coastal headlands and bluffs, and various non-maritime habitats in the Puget Trough.

Perennial from a taproot and a branched, short, woody base, 1.5-8 dm. tall, usually covered with long, soft, curved hairs.

Leaves toothed or entire, the basal oblanceolate, up to 40 cm. long and 4 cm. wide, the cauline becoming sessile and clasping.

Heads usually several in a flat-topped inflorescence, hemispheric, the disk 1-3 cm. wide; involucral bracts somewhat glutinous, the long, slender green tips loose or spreading, not reflexed; rays 10-35, yellow, 8-20 mm. long; pappus of 2 or more awns.
