Distribution: Occuring west of the Cascades crest in the coastal counties in Washington; Alaska to northern Oregon, east across Canada to coastal northeastern North America; Greenland and arctic Eurasia.
Habitat: Coastal beaches, strands, and sand dunes.

Glabrous, mat-forming, yellowish-green, fleshy perennial from a rhizome, the numerous, trailing, freely-branched stems with upturned flowering ends 1-3 dm. tall.
Leaves lanceolate to ovate, 1-3 cm. long and 5-20 mm. broad, smaller on the axillary branches.
Flowers greenish, inconspicuous, single in the leaf axils or stem branches, sometimes monoecious; pedicels stout, short; sepals 5, ovate, 4-7 mm. long; petals 5, whitish, entire, equaling the sepals; stamens 10; styles 3.
Capsule globose, 5-8 mm. long, opening by 3-5 valves.
