Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California, east to Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming.
Habitat: Damp meadows to open forest and rocky slopes at middle elevations in the mountains.

Herbaceous perennial from a taproot, the several stems 1.5-6 dm. tall.
Basal leaves several, up to 2 dm. long, pinnate, the 11-19 leaflets 1-2 cm. long, variously lobed, toothed or cleft; cauline leaves much reduced upward, with large, several-lobed stipules.
Inflorescence a congested, terminal cluster; calyx cup-shaped, reddish-tinged, the 5 lobes triangular, 2-4.5 mm. long; petals 5, white to pink, obovate with a shallow terminal indentation, 2.5-6 mm. long; stamens 10; pistils up to 25, the style twice as long as the ovary.
Achenes about 2 mm. long, smooth.
