Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon, east across most of North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Riparian zones, wet meadows, marshes, shores, springs, and moist forest.

Flowers: June-August

Description:
General:

Glabrous perennial herbs from slender rhizomes, the stems erect., 2-13 dm. tall, usually simple.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, on petioles 0.5-6 mm. long with marginal hairs; leaf blade broadly lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, 4-15 cm. long and 1.5-6.5 cm. wide, entire, glabrous, the tip pointed.

Flowers:

Flowers solitary in the upper leaf axils; pedicles 1.5-7 cm. long, usually glandular; sepals 5, 2.5-9 mm. long, lanceolate; petals 5, widely spreading, yellow, sometimes with a reddish base, 5-12 mm. long, the tip with a short spine, with stalked glands on the lower surface; stamens 5, the filaments united at the base.

Fruits:

Capsules 5-7 mm. long, glabrous.
