Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California.

Habitat: Lowland valleys to open forests at moderate elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: April-June

Description:
General:

Spreading, freely-branched shrub 5-10 dm. tall, the stems finely puberulent, not bristly, brownish to reddish-gray; nodal spines 3, slender, straight, 7-12 mm. long.

Leaves:

Leaves alternate, the blades slightly cordate, 1.5-2.5 cm. broad and slightly longer, nearly glabrous above and pubescent, glandular and paler beneath; blades palmately 3- to 5-lobed less than half their length, the lobes rounded and with deep, rounded teeth.

Flowers:

Flowers 1 or 2, pendant from peduncles shorter than the leaves, the pedicels slender, not jointed, covered with glandular bristles; calyx greenish with a reddish tinge, the tube bell-shaped, 3.5-5.5 mm. long and nearly as broad at the top, the 5 lobes oblong, pointed, sharply reflexed, bright red, 10-13 mm. long; petals 5, white, broadly fan-shaped with a wedge-shaped base, 4-5 mm. long; stamens 5, equal to the calyx lobes; filaments white, anthers reddish; styles 2, fused about half their length, glabrous, equaling the stamens; ovary inferior.

Fruits:

Berry globose-ellipsoid, up to 15 mm. long, reddish-brown.
