Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in southeastern Washington; Washington to Oregon and Nevada, east to Idaho and Colorado.

Habitat: Usually in thickets along streams, but somedtimes on open hllsides.

Erect shrub 1.5-3 m. tall, with long, slender branches mostly grayish- or reddish-brown, not bristly, but with a stout, nodal spine 7-15 mm. long.

Leaf blades broadly ovate to reniform with a truncate, rounded or wedge-shaped base, 2-4 cm. broad and long, usually finely pubescent on both surfaces, 3- to 5-lobed nearly half their length, the lobes with rounded teeth.

Inflorescence a drooping, slender, 3- to 4-flowered raceme, somewhat longer than the leaves; pedicles slender, 10-15 mm. long; calyx narrowly bell-shaped, the tube 2-2.5 mm. long, white or pale greenish, the 5 lobes narrowly oblong, white, 6-7 mm. long, sharply reflexed at blooming; petals white, erect, rounded, 2 mm. long; stamens 5, exceeding the calyx lobes by 1-3 mm.; styles fused over half their length.

Berry globose, 8-12 mm. long, bluish-black, sour.
