Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to Oregon, east to Idaho.

Habitat: Wet places at middle elevations in the mountains.

Flowers: July-August

Description:
General:

Glabrous, rhizomatous perennial with mostly basal leaves, the flowering stems simple, or branched above, 2.5-10 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Basal leaves with blades 10-30 cm. long, the 9-17 leaflets ovate-oblong, 2-6 cm. long, cordate-based, coarsely serrate; cauline leaves 1-2, reduced, with leaf-like stipules.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of cylindric, dense spikes on long peduncles, 3-8 cm. long and 10-18 m. thick, each flower subtended by a papery, brownish-pubescent bract and 2 lateral bractlets; calyx greenish-white to pinkish tinged, urn-shaped, the 4 lobes oval, 2.5 mm. long; petals none; stamens 4, the filaments flattened, 3 times as long as the sepals, white to mauve.

Fruits:

Fruiting calyx lightly winged on the 4 angles.
