Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east across much of North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Wet meadows and similar habitats at moderate elevations.

Perennial herbs from slender rhizomes, the square, slender stems simple or branched, mostly erect, usually with descending hairs along the angles.

Leaves opposite, nearly sessile, pinnately veined, the blade lanceolate to narrowly ovate-oblong, 2-5 cm. long and 6-20 mm. wide, with blunt teeth, acute-tipped and cordate-based, glabrous above and puberulent beneath.

Flowers solitary in the axils of slightly reduced leaves; calyx two-lipped, the upper lip with a prominent transverse appendage, 3.5-4.5 mm. long; corolla blue marked with white, 1.5-2 cm. long, two-lipped, the upper lip hood-like, the lower 3-lobed, spreading, the center lobe large and wide, the lateral lobes attached to the upper lip; stamens 4, the lower pair longer than the upper and with one of the pollen sacs abortive; style 2-parted; ovary 2-celled, superior.
