On our second trip to MORA in 2006 we visited Mowich Lake on the northwest side of the park. WTU's Ben Legler and MORA's Pete Del Zotto led a group of eight volunteers on the 3 day, 2 night trip. Our original plan was to visit Golden Lakes on the west side of the park. However, access difficulties forced us to change plans in mid-trip and after a short deliberation among our group we headed to Mowich Lake instead where we camped at the Mowich Lake Campground and collected in the meadows, ridges, and wetlands near the lake.
Areas visited included Mountain Meadows - a mid-elevation wet meadow habitat that is rare in the park, Ipsut Pass, Tolmie Peak, and Knapsack Pass. We began the trip under warm sunny skies which on the last day gave way to steady rain. However, our enthusiastic group of volunteers was not the least deterred by the rain and we managed a wet but enjoyable last day of collecting.
Among our 147 collections of 137 taxa, we found 4 that were not included in David Bieks Flora of Mount Rainier National Park: water sedge (Carex aquatilis), single-spike sedge (Carex scirpoidea), wandering fleabane (Erigeron peregrinus var. peregrinus), and Spiraea × hitchcockii (hybrid between S. douglasii and S. splendens). Other unusual finds included pale larkspur (Delphinium glaucum), Andersons sword-fern (Polystichum andersonii), and Stricklands tauschia (Tauschia stricklandii).
Participating volunteers included Erin Younger, Nabina Leibow, Cindy Gentry, Sharon Rodman, Lara Massey, Lucia Harrison, Karen Larson, and Monica Delmartinii.
