Two trips were made to MORA during 2006. On the first trip we visited Owyhigh Lakes on the east side of Mount Rainier July 18-20. WTU's Ben Legler and MORA's Pete Del Zotto led the trip. Camping was in the backcountry near Owyhigh Lakes.
This lesser-visited area of the park sits in a subalpine basin flanked by steep cliff-topped Governers Ridge to the east and extensive meadows on Tamanos ridge to the west. Mild sunny weather allowed us to cover much of the area with interesting finds made around the lake shore and on the talus on Governers Ridge, where we encountered locally uncommon plants such as globe anemone (Anemone multifida), Cascade rockress (Arabis furcata), green spleenwort (Asplenium trichomanes-ramosum), and Fletts senecio (Senecio flettii). On the return hike we collected two species of mistletoe (Arceuthobium abietinum and A. tsugense).
Unlike past trips, we focused on collecting uncommon and uncollected (for the park) species, using as a reference a MORA herbarium species list compiled by Arnie Peterson. By trip's end we had made 78 collections of 72 taxa. 18 of the collected taxa (a full 25%) represent new additions to the MORA park herbarium.
Besides Ben Legler, participating WTU staff included David Giblin, and participating MORA staff included Arnie Peterson, and Lindsey Koepke. We were joined by volunteer Diane Doss. Several members of our group saw a female black bear with two cubs near the lakes.
