WTU's Sarah Gage, with assistance from NOCA's Steve Hahn, led a trip to Ross Lake July 12-14. This outing required a boat trip up Ross Lake for access to the area around Desolation Peak and several creek valleys feeding into Ross Lake. 274 collections were made in three days, totaling over 720 specimens and 184 taxa. Sites targeted included alpine habitat on Desolation Peak, dry slopes around the mouth of Lightning Creek, and forested areas along Little Beaver and Perry creeks. Lining the eastern shoreline of Ross Lake are pockets of dry forest with species typically found east of the Cascade Mountains such as ponderosa pine, Rocky Mountain juniper, and balsamroot.
Specimens collected on the trip were identified at WTU in fall 2002/winter 2003, with assistance provided by a Graduate Research Assistantship funded by North Cascades National Park.
Volunteers from WTU included Barb Smith, Ben Legler, Dena Grossenbacher, James Duemmel, Kimiora Ward, Peter Zika, Phil Smith.
Additional participating NOCA staff included Michael Brondi, Greg Gust, and Justin Hohn.
