2006: Dagger Lake

The second trip to NOCA in 2006 was made to Dagger Lake. WTU's Ben Legler and NOCA's Steve Hahn led a group of five volunteers on a 4 day, 3 night backpacking trip to collect around this isolated lake and surrounding slopes. Dagger Lake is located on the eastern edge of the park south of Hwy 20 and can be reached by a 6 mile moderate hike south from Rainy Pass.

In addition to the wetlands around Dagger Lake, the group collected at Stiletto Peak, Stiletto Lake, and in the huge cirque on the north side of Hoch Mountain. The trip began and ended under sunny skies; however, a cold snap during mid trip brought in a few snow flakes.

By trip's end, 167 collections were made, for a total of over 450 individual specimens. 154 taxa were collected, with 11 of those taxa (7.2%) representing new additions to the NOCA park herbairum. Notable finds included Cerastium beeringianum, Saxifraga adscendens, and 12 species of Carex

The capable assistance of Heather, NOCA's horse wrangler, was provided to haul collecting presses to and from Dagger Lake.

Participating volunteers included Maria Gerace, Charlie Baughman, Myria Rodeman and Student Conservation Associates Nathan Walker and Matt Lee.
