In late June of 2006 WTU's Ben Legler and NOCA's Steve Hahn led a group of 7 volunteers on a 4 day, 3 night trip to the Stehekin Valley at the head of Lake Chelan in the North Cascades National Park Complex. In a departure from past trips, the main focus of this trip was to generate a set of representative specimens of the valley's flora for use by NOCA resource managers working in the valley.
Unlike our normal method of camping in the backcountry, accommodations were provided in a house furnished by the park! Each day we split up into small groups and drove or hiked to various locations within the valley to sample as broad a range of habitats and species possible.
Areas visited included Coon Lake, McGregor Mtn. Trail, Purple Creek Pass Trail, and the highly disturbed Buckner Orchard, Stehekin Airstrip and nearby gravel pit.
A total of 299 collections were made, comprising 836 individual specimens and 248 distinct taxa. The large number of taxa collected on this trip reflects the high species diversity found within the valley. The Stehekin Valley has been well botanized in the past; despite this, 22 of the taxa collected (8.9%) represent new park records for the NOCA park herbarium.
In addition to Ben Legler and Steve Hahn, participating WTU staff included David Giblin and participating NOCA staff included Vicky Gempko.
Participating volunteers included Diane Doss, Dale Blum, Barbara Smith, and Student Conservation Associates Jennette Timmer, Tricia Downey, Cheryl Lowe, and Anders Huseth.
