Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades in Washington; Yukon Territory to California, east across Canada and the northern half of the U.S. to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Woodlands or open fields.

Flowers: May-August

Origin: Native

Growth Duration: Annual, Biennial

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Pollination: Bumblebees, bees, flies, wasps, beetles

Description:
General:

Somewhat glandular annual with erect to decumbent stems 1-6 dm. long, with spreading to retrorse stiff hairs.

Leaves:

Leaves mostly basal, long petioled, the blades cordate, 2-7 cm. broad, palmately deeply divided into 5 wedge-shaped segments, these variously cleft or toothed up to half their length.

Flowers:

Flowers mostly 2 per peduncle, the pedicles slender, 1.5-3 times the length of the calyx; sepals 4-8 mm. long with a bristle tip 1-2 mm. long, about equal to the pinkish, slightly-notched petals; fertile stamens 10, the filaments not fused; stylar column 1.5-2.5 cm long, stigmas 1mm; pistil 1, carpel 3-5, the receptacle much elongate.

Fruits:

Mericarps 5, 3-3.5 mm, not wrinkled, sparsely stiff-hairy; carpels often separating explosively; seeds faintly pitted.
